Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry

The Ghana National Chamber of Commerce & Industry is an independent organisation serving and promoting the commercial and industrial interest of small and large companies in Ghana. The chamber in its present form was established on the 8th of November 1961 under an Act of Parliament (Executive Instrument No. 196). The chamber serves the local business community with three core activities that are its founding principles. These are as follows:
  • Policy, lobbying and representation;
  • Networking and business development; and
  • Business Support services.
Through funding support from BUSAC, GNCCI has been able to carry out research and study of the various taxes that are charged to businesses and which add up to the total cost of doing business in Ghana. Also, they have been able to compare the corporate tax systems of Malaysia and South Africa to that pertaining to Ghana.

Information from these activities have informed GNCCI discussions with the government institutions like the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), CEPS, the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, Ministry of Trade and Industry and PSI & PSD and officials in the Office of the President, on GNCCI’s advocacy initiative of reducing the cost of doing business in Ghana, which has received BUSAC funding.

Though advocacy is a fundamental part of GNCCI activities, Mr. Emmanuel Doni-Kwame, Head, Marketing and Trade Investment Promotion at GNCCI points out that the following tax amendments, i.e. reduction in withholding taxes captured in the national budget of 2007 for the following categories:

  • Dividends – from 10% down to 8%
  • Management and technical services - from 20% down to 15%
  • Rent Income - from 10% down to 8%
  • Capital Gains - from 10% down to 8%; are a direct consequence of GNCCI’s actions, made possible through the research findings and other activities implemented with funds from BUSAC.
