Advocacy towards enactment of Law
A conducive legal framework is necessary for the development of private enterprise in any economy. This sometimes demand that laws peculiar to specific business sectors are enacted to advance developments within the business environment. The Ghana Cooperative Council, (GCC) which represents about 2400 business in Ghana see the need for a Law that would address the segment of Cooperative Business in Ghana. They contend that, the law governing cooperatives in Ghana presently, is a Decree of 1968, which in their view is obsolete and do not meet the demands of the competitive business environment of current times.
GCC is using the tool of advocacy towards the goal of getting all stakeholders support the enactment of the needed Law to improve business within the sector. The cooperative organization is generally known as a formidable mechanism for accelerating development within the informal sector. This GCC initiative has great potential of supporting private sector development in Ghana, and is receiving support from the BUSAC Fund.
